Sweet 16 Picks - Making Money Off March Madness!

May 20th, 2011 Tony George

Although nearly everyone's bracket is busted beyond repair at this point, March Madness 2011 has been incredible so far. There have been an amazing number of upsets, and there have been countless great games. Now that the dust of the first four days has settled, the Sweet 16 is set to begin this Thursday. There are several surprising matchups to go along with some great, but expected, games.

Taking Duke -8.5 points against Arizona is a great bet. While Duke struggled to beat Michigan, that is likely to be a wake-up call for the Blue Devils. Although Arizona beat Texas, that is very unlikely to happen here. Texas is poorly-coached, while Duke has Coach K, who has proven time and time again that he is one of the very best coaches in the game, especially during the tournament. Duke should roll here, and they could easily win by 15 or more.

Wisconsin against Butler is a very intriguing Sweet 16 matchup. There are a lot of questions about Wisconsin's offensive abilities, but they are a very deep team. Butler provides very interesting competition for Wisconsin, and this game could easily come down to who touches the ball last. It is really a coin toss as to who advances to the Elite 8 between these two teams.

Kansas should not have any problems handling Richmond. Richmond lives and dies by the 3-point shot, and Kansas should not have any trouble defending that. You can look for the clock to strike midnight in this game, and Richmond's carriage will turn back into a pumpkin fairly quickly.

Florida State versus VCU is a very intriguing game, as VCU has easily handled every opponent they have faced so far. This game is a classic mismatch of styles and defense typically wins matchups like this. Florida State's defense is extremely good, and they held Notre Dame to just 57 points to get to the Sweet 16. However, you can get VCU plus 4 points, and no one has been able to stop them thus far.

Jimmer Fredette for BYU is one of the best players in the country, but BYU really is a one-man show. If Florida is able to contain Fredette, the Gators should not have much of a problem knocking off BYU and moving on to the Elite 8.

In other Sweet 16 games, North Carolina should get past Marquette. Marquette is on quite a hot streak, but they are full of JUCO players. However, North Carolina is not a good enough team this year to beat the winner of the Ohio State versus Kentucky game. The San Diego State versus Connecticut game is also very interesting. While you certainly cannot count San Diego State out, they are not playing Mountain West teams anymore. UConn is on a whole different level than the competition San Diego State played this year. Ohio State should not have much trouble with a Kentucky team that has just skimmed by thus far.

Overall, there is something unique about every game in the Sweet 16. As we all know, nothing is a given when it comes to betting on March Madness, but these picks should give you a leg up on making your wallet at least a little bit thicker by the time the Elite 8 starts.
